Piano Lab

Objectives:

  • Develop life long piano skills
  • Demonstrate musicianship skills which will facilitate reading music and its transfer to the piano.
  • Demonstrate the ability to "lift" simple melodies by ear.
  • Demonstrate the ability to 'comp' chord progressions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to demonstrate proper technique in playing scales: C, D, G, A, E, F and Bb.
  • Demonstrate musicianship skills in performance of selected and approved literature.

Grading Expectations:

Students grade will be determined by combining three factors. Points are earned in each class for the following:

  • 1.  Students in-class work
  • 2.  Students in-class performances
  • 3.  Students semester project

1. In-Class Work
Points PossibleDescription
20 The student works to the best of their ability for the entire class period. The student does not hesitate to ask questions and consitantly strives to meet goals set by themselves and the teacher. Student shows a willingness to push themselves and to participate actively in the class period.
17 The student works to the best of their ability for most of the class period. The student does not hesitate to ask questions and strives to meet goals set by themselves and the teacher. Student shows a willingness to push themselves and to participate actively in the class period.
14 The student works for the entire class period. The student hesitates to ask questions and does not meet all of the goals set by themselves and the teacher. The student does not push themselves to do their best.
<12 The student does not work for the entire class period. The student fails to ask questions and does not meet all of the goals set by themselves and the teacher. The student does not push themselves to do their best.

2. In-School Performances
Points PossibleDescription
20 The student performs a prepared piece to the best of their ability. The piece should contain few, if any, mistakes and should have a consistant and steady beat/pulse. The piece is performed with confidence.
17 The student performs a prepared piece. The piece should contain few, if any, mistakes and should have a consistant and steady beat/pulse. The piece is peformed with confidence.
14 The student performs a piece that is not as prepared as it could have been. The piece contained some fingering mistakes and wrong notes. However, the piece has a consistant and steady beat/pulse.
<12 The student performs a piece that shows little or no preparation. The performances contains many wrong notes and incorrect fingerings and fails to have a consistant steady beat/pulse.

3. Semester Project

100 The student performs a full legnth piece to the best of their ability. The piece should contain few, if any, mistakes and should have a consistant and steady beat/pulse. The piece is performed with confidence.
85 The student performs a full legnth piece. The piece should contain few, if any, mistakes and should have a consistant and steady beat/pulse. The piece is peformed with confidence.
75 The student performs a full legnth piece that is not as prepared as it could have been. The piece contained some fingering mistakes and wrong notes. However, the piece has a consistant and steady beat/pulse.
<60 The student performs a full legnth piece that shows little or no preparation. The performances contains many wrong notes and incorrect fingerings and fails to have a consistant steady beat/pulse.

Total Points for Semester One - 800:

  • 600 pts for in class work - 30 class periods at 20 pts.
  • 100 pts for in class performance - 5 examples for 20 pts.
  • 100 pts for Semester project - 1 project

Total Points for Semester Two - 800:

  • 600 pts for in class work - 30 class periods at 20 pts.
  • 100 pts for in class performance - 5 examples for 20 pts.
  • 100 pts for Semester project - 1 project
