Jazz Improvisation
The Jazz Improvisation class teaches students how to perform music on their instrument, solo or in ensemble, with no music or with just lead sheets. The class starts with basic theory and moves quickly to playing techniques and concepts designed to get students playing in small ensembles by the end of the class. Focus is on scales, modes, styles, chord changes, lead sheets, ensemble playing and soloing. Grading is individualized by growth and demonstrated in performance at various points during the class.
This class is open to all wind, brass, percussion, string and vocal students. At least two years playing experience is needed; guitar players need a working knowledge of all major, minor and seventh chords, drummers need performance ability of rock and swing beats and bass players need a basic knowldge of root derived bass lines. All other players need a basic technical knowledge of their instruments. Perspective students should see a music teacher for more information before enrolling in this course.
